Being a genjutsu user myself, I've come to learn a lot about genjutsu using.
A person gets caught in a genjustu by one of their senses. Maybe they've looked into the eyes of someone with a kekkei genkai or they heard a small tune being played by the enemy.
Genjutsus are based on illusions so one key point of figuring out if you're trapped within one is to look at your surrounds, if anything has changed significantly that's a key sign. Always, always, always know your surroundings. It's important not only to keep yourself less vulnerable against genjutsu users, but other types of shinobi as well.
If you notice that there is no one with you except the genjutsu user or their voice, then that's another key sign. Most likely you weren't alone to begin with so if your friends disappear there's something up. It's not unlikely that your friends can get trapped as well, but the genjutsu user will have a harder time controlling the genjutsu if there are multiple people they are trying to control and confuse. If you were alone to begin with, you may not be able to use this as an identifier though.
Another way to tell if you're in a genjutsu is to see if there's something that is coming from nowhere like bugs, flower petals, etc. Obviously that wouldn't happen in real life so your best bet is to say it's a genjutsu. So, if you have things falling out of the sky for no apparent reason, there's your identifier. Also, a lack of natural events is a signifier. Like if you're in the woods and there are no birds chirping or the wind isn't blowing.
If I were caught in a genjutsu, I would first try to analyze the rank of the genjutsu. If I can easily distinguish the fact that I am in a genjutsu, it's probably a low rank genjutsu so I may be able to just use Kai and release myself. If the rank is too high for Kai to work, I would have to inflict pain upon myself to "wake" myself up. The reason why pain works is because you're forcing your mind to ignore the genjutsu and go back to it's natural instincts of protecting its body. The higher the level, the more pain must be inflicted. So, a low rank genjutsu can be thwarted with a hard pinch while a high ranking one may require you to stab yourself.
If my friend is caught in a genjutsu, I would most likely have to hurt them. Typically, a punch with chakra will do the trick.
I kinda feel a little better writing this.
